“Harnessing Your Emotions” Week 6

Podcast: Part 1- “Put Off the Old Man”

Podcast: part 2- “Steps to Renewing Your Mind”

Ephesians 4:22-24, “22Put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to deceitful lusts; 23And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”

When we ask Christ to be the Lord our lives,  God replaces our old spirit with the Spirit of the living God. It is this born again spirit that is righteous and perfect just as Christ is. It is our Spirit that is the part of us the Bible refers to as the “new man.” But the Spirit is not the only part of a person. Man is, actually, a three part being: spirit, soul and body. The other two parts (the soul and body) are what the Bible refers to as the “old man.”

Some people think when you are born again that the old person simply ceases to exist. However, this is far from the truth. The old you isn’t erased away completely just because you have asked Christ to be your Lord. After you are born again, you are no longer a child of the devil, but you are still left with some of the old you always had. You still have the same old feelings that got you into trouble. You still have the same, old emotions that are often unstable and out of control. And unfortunately, the same, old perceptions about yourself and others–still exist.

Before we come to Christ, the image of who we are is often through a distorted lens. To put it bluntly; the way we think is often messed up. When our thinking is messed up, we filter all that we do through this wrong thinking causing our behavior to be wrong.

In order to become all we are called to become in Christ Jesus, we have to change the way we think. We must renew our minds according to God’s Word. We must become acquainted with what God thinks and says about us.

In this Podcast from the “Harnessing Your Emotions” series you will learn all about how to put off the wrong thinking that keeps you in a constant state of turmoil; and how to put on right thinking according to God’s Word bringing hope and peace.  I hope you will take a few minutes to listen in. It is sure to change your life!

  1. Only the Holy Spirit could have spoken these words to you , Amy. I have lived the teaching you gave in this message but never to the fullest that you have. My emotions have had too much control over my decisions and how I have responded to life’s temptations and trials. Although I have memorized so many scriptures I realized that I have not boldly stood upon them in my thought life. I have allowed defeating thoughts to creep in and not stopped them at the get go. It just takes one thought Amy, as you said ,to lead you down a path of misery and anxiety. So, I am stopping my thoughts when they are unhealthy and not empowering them any further with my first line of defense scripture of “get thee behind me Satan.” I have been defeated by the shame I have felt over my poor choices and the consequences that have followed. Many times I have agreed with satan that God really doesn’t want to use me anymore because I knew better and committed my Mack-daddy sins during the time I was calling Jesus Lord of my life. I have been too afraid to walk boldly in Gods word because I felt he wouldn’t really come through for me because I have blown it for His kingdom so many times. I will listen to this teaching again and again and get your paper on the scriptures you have used in your life so I can walk in the same victory that you have. No wonder satan was allowed to come against you so much this past few days. God desired you to be in such a place that this teaching was birthed not from a proud spirit but a broken and contrite heart. Habitual worrying and negative thoughts are not how God wants me to live. I want to get up more quickly after I sin and not dwell in guilt any longer. I know it will not be easy because a 30 plus year habit is going to take some work on my behalf to break. But knowing that somebody out there in Christendom (who has committed so many of the sins I have and is so much like me ) has gotten up and kept walking has given me renewed hope that I can change my pattern of self defeat as well. Again, your willingness to be transparent has opened the door to help make me that much freer! I pray that women and men everywhere would hear this message embrace it, and make it their own. Yes , “own it “as you have said. I must finish the good fight and not look back at the battles lost but ahead believing God can and will win victories through me once again for His glory. Thank you Amy ,for enduring those fiery darts , and having the courage to trust in Gods word and that it is personally for you despite your past sins. You make me want to pick up my armor again and not be daunted by my fears and failures of my past. I must get up and get going ! Truly, there is therefore now “no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” I am in Christ and I need to start acting like it!

    • Dottie,

Your life is a testimony. I pray that from this day forward you will never doubt the call of God on your own life. We all sin. We all fall short, which is exactly why we need a Savior. You are beautiful inside and out. Don’t ever question whether or not God can use you. He is really good at using broken vessels for His glory. And you are no exception. You are a trophy of His grace, Dottie. And I love you much! Thank you for your steadfast encouragement. It means more to me than you know. Amy

  2. Truth, Truth, Truth!!! You are opening women’s eyes and ears to Truth and it will bear much fruit!!! Truth believed is and will always bring deliverance! Well done, once again.

    • June- You encouragement is precious to me! I think of you every time I post these messages. So glad you are able to listen in and have your soul fed! I miss you!
      Amy
